We asked subscribers to email some of the
best weight loss programs they joined over the years. We wanted to know
the best personal experience with various weight loss
program and diet centers such as Jenny Craig or Nutri
System.
The conclusion were mix at best. Some people did best on a commercial
weight loss program
while others seemed to struggle. The biggest complaint was the restriction
of eating only their prepared meals. Subscribers commented they could
as easily bought Lean Cuisine or Smart One frozen dinners from their
local grocery store for less money.
Organizations such as Weight Watchers and Take Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS)
appear to have the best success for any program according to
our
subscribers. Also, most enjoy face to face support of
others who are struggling with the same problems.
TOTAL COST OF PROGRAM
Many diet centers advertise a low price on radio or TV
such as 20 pounds for $20, but we found the best way to get an accurate cost
is to call or visit their website.
Example: Typical program cost $20 to join
but the program requires you to buy their food at $79 - $89 per week.
Total cost to lose 20 pounds was around $1000 for 1 pound per week weight
loss.
NOTE: This assumes that you only eat their meals each day. Depending on
your metabolism and genetic make up, some people may lose more than 1
pound per week.
BOTTOM LINE
Weight loss centers ARE NOT require to collect and disclose data about
their effectiveness.
Visit websites, call customer service and assume worst case in terms of
how much you can actually lose. If they say you'll lose between 1 and 2
pounds, assume 1 pound per week. Some people may do very well on their
program for the short-term but you should never depend on prepackaged foods.
