Dear Editor, My name is Jessica. I am 14, and I have a question. Ok, 1 month ago I was 190lbs. My mom said that I am starving myself. I eat an energy bar for breakfast and a Lean Cuisine for dinner. But since doing that I have gone down to 175lbs. Should I switch to a more healthy diet that is balanced, or should I keep this one up? Thanks, ~
Jessica Hi Jessica, Thanks for contacting us. I get the feeling you know the answer to your question. You succeeded at losing 15 pounds by starving yourself. Unfortunately, it is very EASY to gain the weight back that you lost plus a little more. Every time you starve yourself to lose weight, you lower your metabolism, which makes losing weight the next time even harder. You were successful at losing 15 pounds but it's better to lose weight eating balanced meals. This way you will not re-gain the weight you just lost. It's much better to eat 4 small meals of 200 to 400 calories each. Your total caloric intake was roughly 600 calories per day, which definitely qualifies as a starvation diet. Listen to your mother, she's right. Now that you lost 15 pounds, incorporate a balanced diet of fruits and vegetables along with other nutritional foods. You will still lose weight at 1200
to 1500 calories per day and chances are good, you won't gain the weight
all back when you get tired of starving yourself. That's the problem with
starvation diets, most people get tired of them, get a ferocious
appetite and gain all the weight back. This causes an endless cycle of
despair, frustration and hopelessness.
