Last-Minute Healthy Food Ideas
Does it seem like you never have the
time to serve healthy food during the week? Do you rely on
takeout, the pizza delivery man, macaroni and cheese?
If you know how to shop, you can eat
healthy on the busiest of nights!
If you learn just a few new techniques and tips, you can be on the road to easily planning and preparing healthy meals choices for your family with very little effort and time. You'll feel better and, if you have kids, you'll be teaching them healthy food habits that last a lifetime! The best way to avoid last-minute meal disasters is to have a plan. Grocery stores can be your best friend...if you know how to shop. Healthy Food You can Prepare at Home:
1. Roasted chicken from the deli (skin
removed), a bag of pre-packaged salad, whole wheat bread ore
bagels.
2. Chicken Caesar salad (don't buy the
kit - you don't want the dressing they'll give you).
3. Turkey bacon BLT's, vegetarian baked
beans.
4. Deli meat sandwiches on whole wheat
rolls or tortillas, with bake tortilla chips and deli fruit salad.
5. Refrigerated pastas and sauces (look
for the low fat varieties), salad, breadsticks.
6. Frozen filled pastas are another healthy food option. My grocery store has a frozen Portobello Mushroom ravioli that's delicious and low fat. I just boil and add some sauce and a steamed vegetable.
7. Baking potatoes - cook them in the
microwave and serve with steamed broccoli and light sour
cream; add a pre-marinated chicken breast or piece of fish if you like. These
food take
just a few minutes to cook.
8. Lean Cuisine frozen stir fry meal,
add extra veggies and some brown rice.
9. Veggie burgers (such as Gardenburgers)
topped with lettuce, tomato, avocado (optional) with baked
potato chips and a salad.
10. Fajitas - Buy some southwestern
flavored, precooked chicken breast strips, and a bag of
frozen, sliced bell peppers and onions. Heat and serve in tortillas with your choice of
condiments.
