Foods high in saturated fat should be avoided. This is the type of fat that causes narrowing of the arteries, due to plague build-up overtime.  Occasionally eating foods high in saturated fat will not hurt but a consistent diet of high saturated fat will cause heart related diseases.

Some foods that are high in total fat may not be high in saturated fat.  Take cashew nuts for instance. On the surface, a serving of nuts can be as high as 17 grams of fat. However, most nuts only have a few gram of saturated fat.

Now lets examine the innocent looking muffin. The average large muffin weighs in at more than 500 calories and 20 grams of fat. Out of those 20 grams of fat, 14 are saturated. Why? Because muffins are nothing more than cake disguise by an innocent sounding name.

A diet that’s good for your heart is also low in cholesterol. The types of foods you should include in your healthy diet to lower cholesterol are:

  • Foods high in fiber, like fruits, vegetables and grains
  • Soy Products ( tofu, soybeans, soy flour)
  • Fish rich in Omega-3 fatty acids
  • Beans
