Dear Editor,
I'm considering the Atkins diet
but my friend warned me about a diet that's low in carb but high in fat.
She said high fat diets are not healthy and will not help me lose
weight. What do you say?

Dear Sophia,
No offense, but it should be
obvious that a high fat diet will not help you lose weight. There are 9
calories for every gram of fat. If you take in more calories than you
burn, you will not lose weight. A high fat diet is loaded with excess
calories and will make any weight loss effort very difficult.
There is also much confusion
concerning low carb diets. It's not the carb that make you fat but
excess calories. Junk food carbs should be avoided but complex carb from
fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes are important to a
nutritionally balanced diet.
Atkins diet tend to promote low
carb - high fat dieting. There's nothing wrong with reducing
simple carbs from your diet but not at the expense of eating more fat,
especially saturated fat which is very un-healthful and will NOT help
you lose weight.
